On August 13 Peter Anthony Allen was hanged at Walton Prison in Liverpool and Gwynne Owen Evans at Strangeways Prison in Manchester, for the murder of John Alan West. They were the last people to be executed in the UK.
On April 16 at the Buckingham Assize Court twelve men were given sentences totalling 307 years for stealing £2,600,000 in used bank notes, after holding up the night train from Glasgow to London in August 1963 – a heist that became known as the Great Train Robbery.
In June Nelson Mandela and seven others are sentenced to life imprisonment in South Africa, and sent to the Robben Island prison. Mandela would remain imprisoned (there and in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison) until 1990.
